Introduction
This file describes the
changes that have been made from previous versions of Cameraid. The
idea is to give users of old versions an idea of what features have
been changed and improved. If this is your first version of Cameraid,
you should read
the manual.
Cameraid 1.3.1 (the officially
released version) can be downloaded from:
http://classic.cameraid.com/cameraid/download.html
There are currently no beta
versions of Cameraid available.
Product Update
Information
- The carbon version is
not a
free upgrade to all old
customers
- The carbon version
requires a new registration code, specifically purchased for
the carbon version.
- You can still use the
old version under Classic in MacOS X, if you choose not to
purchase an upgrade.
- Free registration codes
will be provided to customers who bought the old version
between December 1st 2001 and December 10th 2002.
- If you qualify for a
free upgrade, E-mail
me with the
name and E-mail address you used for registration and the
registration code.
- Please allow up to
48 hours for processing.
- E-mail again, if you
don't have a response in that time - I'm really suffering
from SPAM these days.
- Corporate and site
license codes for Cameraid are compatible across versions and
will work without modification.
- The classic version
works with old classic codes and is a free upgrade
- As of 1.3.1, Cameraid
Carbon (MacOS X) registration codes will also work in the Classic
and 68K versions.
- As of version 1.3.1,
the price for Cameraid (all versions) is US$20.00
- The increase reflects
the recent changes in the exchange ratio between the Euro and
US Dollar. I pay my rent & groceries in Euros and the cost
of living hasn't gone down here, so I'm increasing the
price.
- Due to EU regulations,
EU customers now pay VAT when buying Cameraid from Kagi.
Version 1.3.1, November 20,
2003
Known bugs:
- Trying to start a batch
processor with no photos open in the browser can cause a crash in
MacOS X. This part wasn't apparently tested appropriately because
the normal way to use Cameraid is to open the photos into the
browser first and then run the batch processor.
(2005-08-21)
What's new:
- User interface code
updates to account for MacOS 10.3, Panther.
- Clicking on the filename
now correctly reveals the file in the Finder even in MacOS
X.
- Various minor bug
fixes.
- Version 1.3.1 for
M68K-based processors (68020 or better)
- Known
problem: Binary Scaling mode doesn't seem to work on native 68K
Macs even though it works on PowerPC-based Macs in emulation. I
suspect this is a Quickdraw bug in an older QD version, but I
have been unable to locate it exactly.
I have already started working
on Cameraid 2.0. This is a major rewrite of the Cameraid viewer, with
a lot of new functionality planned. Registration codes will not
change for the basic version (with nearly all the new features
included), but there may be a "pro" version that is needed to
activate a few selected new features.
Version 1.3, March 7,
2003
Known problems:
- Due to a dynamic library
linking issue, 1.3 Classic refused run under MacOS 8.6. I changed
the link option (nothing else), so if you are reading this, this
issue has been fixed and the version number is still 1.3 (build
time is March 8th).
What's new:
- Some bugs in the previous
beta version were found and fixed.
- Color casts can now be
chosen from 12 different colors instead of just 6.
- Natural order sorting was
added.
- The manual is now up to
date.
Version 1.3b1 bugs, February
14, 2003
Bugs (please report any that
have not been listed):
- If you open a document in
the viewer and it was already there, the scroll bar will not
change accordingly. Found it myself, fixed it right away.
- I found a really obscure
bug under Carbon in MacOS 9: keyboard equivalents in the shortcuts
menu may not work every time. This doesn't affect MacOS X and I
found a work-around that works on all three platforms (Classic,
Carbon and OS X), so I will include that with the next
version.
- Auto adjust dates doesn't
do anything in version 1.3b1. I broke it when I was optimizing the
file opening speed and forgot to test it properly.
- The ISO sensitivity from
Nikon D100 cameras is not displayed. It's because Nikon chose to
hide this information in a proprietary structure. I will look into
this before releasing version 1.3, if I have the time. I don't
know why they chose to ignore the EXIF standard in this
respect.
Version 1.3b1, February 10,
2003
I meant to release version
1.2.1b5 for Carbon and Classic, but I wanted to add a preferences
dialog to Cameraid in order to have better and cleaner control over
some of the options in the program. In the process, I ended up adding
quite a few new features and I ended up with something that has
enough new functionality to be called version 1.3.
I think you'll find the new
features particularly useful, if you manage a large collection of
photos that has been gathered from various sources, such as Internet
and usenet downloads.
New features:
- Preferences window
- Most of the old options
from the menus have been moved here.
- The viewer window
background color can be changed.
- Find Duplicates window
enabled you to search a set of photos to find duplicate
files.
- It's very fast for
smaller sets of files, but can be used for large files sets
too.
- I have tested this
feature with over 90000 files listed in the Cameraid
viewer.
- If the photos do not
have thumbnails, allocate about 0.5kB of program memory per
file (double that to be really safe). 90000 files used about
45MB, if I remember correctly. If you are using MacOS X, just
sit back and let virtual memory do its magic.
- Use this feature with a
batch processor that moves photos with negative grades into the
trash.
- Two new sorting types
(creation and modification date) and vastly improved sorting
speed
- Significantly improved
file opening and directory scanning speed
- Under MacOS 9, operations
that can be aborted can be stopped by holding down command period,
even if Cameraid is not active. This should be useful, if you
accidentally drag and drop a whole folder into Cameraid.
- Lossless transforms of
large files are a lot faster under MacOS X.
- Version 1.3 b 1 carbon now
uses antialiased fonts under MacOS X. Selected text in text boxes
still looks a bit rough, but that seems to be a system problem
under Carbon TextEdit and Quartz text rendering.
- The "plist" resource was
fixed - it had the wrong ID and didn't list folders as valid
objects for dropping into Cameraid. As a result, the application
menu now has the right name (just Cameraid) and drag and drop into
Cameraid may work better under some versions of MacOS X.
- Minor fixes and tweaks
here and there, just about everywhere.
Version 1.2.1b4 Carbon,
January 4, 2003
New in this version:
- Fix for untyped files bug
mentioned below.
- Fix for rename dialog bug
(not batch processing related)
- Truncation to 31
characters was not being done correctly
- I tried a 63 character
limit too, but it was leading to trouble because of how the
Carbon interfaces handle long filenames. I may look into longer
filename support some time in the future.
- Drag and dropping untyped
(or any files for that matter) onto the Cameraid icon in the
Finder should now work.
Note: the keyboard shortcuts
help window is not available from the help menu in the carbon
version. I'll look into this, but for now, you can refer to the
snapshop
of the classic version window in the Cameraid manual.
Bugs in Version 1.2.1b3
Carbon (Updated January 1, 2003)
Known bugs:
- The batch processor will
still fail to operate on some untyped files.
- Cameraid was
determining the type of the file correctly, but it was being
reset later
- Enable "Automatic Type
Adjustment" from the Edit->Photo Info menu to work around
this problem
I'll probably provide a fixed
version fairly soon.
Version 1.2.1b3 Carbon,
December 31, 2002
New in this version:
- The batch processor should
now process untyped files correctly.
- A type code is shown even
for untyped files.
- Types can be assigned
automatically when files are opened (Edit menu->Photo
Info).
- Lossless transforms
include progressify and deprogressify.
- These commands are
actually quite good for repairing somewhat damaged
files.
- Progressive scan JPEGs
are usually smaller, but may load slower than linear scan
files.
- The batch processor can
now lock and unlock original files.
- Some users requested
the ability to lock files from the batch processor.
- You can create lock and
unlock shortcut menu items using this feature.
- A 24-bit color icon for
the application itself will now show up in MacOS X
- It's the same old
design, but in true color and at 48x48 and 32x32.
- I didn't add a 128x128
icon because it would have increased download sizes.
- Document icons are
still only 32x32 at 8 bit color.
- Dragging files to trash
now seems to work
- I had to write special
code to detect & move files to the trash under MacOS
X
- I can't find anything
wrong with my original code - if you are a programmer and have
an idea, please contact me.
- The progress window now
looks a bit cleaner
- The batch processor {ext}
and {type} directives works slightly differently.
- It now depends on the
type of the file that it names instead of the original
file
- Default rename patterns
were changed to use {ext}
- Batch processing the shown
movie file will now work correctly.
- Quicktime used to
prevent some operations on a movie that was being
displayed.
I think I will need one more
beta version, but the problems in 1.2.1b2 were causing difficulties
to a lot of people, so I decided to release a fix now instead of
waiting.
Bugs in Version 1.2.1b2
Carbon (Updated December 18, 2002)
Known bugs:
- Batch processing will
probably skip untyped files
- Folder names do not
display correctly in the batch processor window - should work OK
though.
- TEXT and ???? documents in
shortcuts folder may not open correctly (neither do untyped
files)
- This isn't as bad as it
sounds - I don't think this feature has all that many
uses
- Dragging to trash still
doesn't work under MacOS X (see below, I didn't have time to work
on this for beta 2)
I'll collect bug reports for a
few more days and release another beta version.
So far my efforts to make
dialog text render nicely antialiased have failed, although I'm
tracking down the elusive QDSwapPortTextFlags to fix that... Any
clues as to how to get that to work under Codewarrior Pro 8.3 are
welcome.
Version 1.2.1b2 Carbon,
December 16, 2002
New in this version:
- Opening untyped files in
MacOS X has been fixed.
- Batch processor window
size is correct for previously saved documents that are
opened.
- Folder aliases will work
correctly.
- Binary scaling mode is now
better optimized for MacOS X, so photos may display faster.
Features that did not make this release:
- User interface layout
improvements
- New OS X style icons for
Cameraid
Bugs in Version 1.2.1b1
Carbon
- All aliases to folders in
1.2.1b1 are mistaken for CFBundle applications, so no photos will
be opened
- I broke this part while
doing some last minute coding to support CFBundle
aliases
- The work-around is to
drag and drop folders directly onto the Cameraid icon or the
viewer window
- Some (many) JPEG files are
not being recognized by Cameraid
- MacOS X often leaves
file types totally empty (just four nulls instead of four
regular characters) and 1.2.1b1 wasn't built to look for those
files.
- Saved batch processor
windows were not wide enough to show all the controls in
them.
I will wait a few days for
more bug reports before posting a new beta version with these bugs
fixed. Thank you for your patience. Given the nature of the bugs
found so far, I expect to have a new version available by Monday,
December 16th.
Version 1.2.1b1 Carbon,
December 11, 2002
This is the first "carbonized"
release of Cameraid. What this means is that this version will run
native under MacOS X and under CarbonLib in MacOS 9. A classic
version of 1.2.1 will also be provided in the near future.
Here are the main
differences:
- This is not a free
upgrade
- The carbon version
requires a new registration code, specifically purchased for
the carbon version.
- You can still use the
old version under Classic in MacOS X, if you choose not to
purchase an upgrade.
- If you need a feature
not present in the Carbon version, you should buy the classic
version.
- Free registration codes
will be provided to customers who bought the old version in
December 1st 2001 to December 10th 2002.
- If you qualify for a
free upgrade, E-mail
me with the
name and E-mail address you used for registration and the
registration code.
- Please allow up to
48 hours for processing.
- E-mail again, if you
don't have a response in that time - I'm really suffering
from SPAM these days.
- Corporate and site
license codes for Cameraid are compatible across versions and
will work without modification.
- No serial download
support in the Carbon version
- The carbon version does
not support serial port downloads from digital cameras.
- Serial port support
under Carbon is next to non-existent and certainly didn't
encourage me to work on this.
- Look into card readers
or use the classic version under MacOS 9 or Classic.
- Look &
feel
- The release version
will probably look cleaner than the beta, but the program
should work OK under Aqua.
- Navigation services are
used for opening files. You can now open folders or multiple
files using one open command.
- Menu layout had to be
changed somewhat to account for Aqua.
- Keyboard shortcuts were
changed where necessary.
- Bug fixes & feature
enhancements
- The Shortcuts menu is
updated as necessary when Cameraid is running.
- Shortcuts to CFBundle
and Cocoa applications (such as Photoshop 7, which I don't have
to test with) should work correctly
- Launch Services is
used for MacOS X
- A best effort system
(seems to work OK) using the old interfaces is used for
MacOS 9, because Apple doesn't provide Launch Services (why,
oh, why).
- Collection file opening
enhancement
- Collection files use
aliases for storing links to collections of photos.
Sometimes these aliases would break.
- Version 1.2.1 makes
a significant effort to look for files related to broken
aliases by looking for the file and folder names.
- Collections will
open slower, if they contain broken aliases, but the wrong
files are opened less often and fewer links are totally
lost.
- Collection opening
progress is shown.
- The error -50 renaming
problem described below has been fixed
- Thanks to a new
compiler that actually optimizes correctly, lossless transforms
should be faster than before.
- 68K Macs are no longer
supported starting from version 1.2.1.
- Use version 1.2.
- Codewarrior support for
68K code generation ended with version Pro 6 - I'm now using
version 8.3.
- If you find a really
good reason why you have to have 1.2.1 for 68K, I can maybe dig
up my CW Pro 6.
Known problems in version
1.2.1b1:
- The very first few
downloads of 1.2.1b1 got a version that will crash when web
shortcuts are selected from the shortcuts menu. I thought I was
fast enough to replace this version, but VersionTracker.com proved
to be even faster. My apologies for those who were affected -
please re-download and the problem should be gone.
- Dragging files to the
trash doesn't work.
- Dragging anywhere else
seems to work fine, so I don't know what is going wrong
there.
- The workaround is to
make a batch processor that uses the Files panel to move files
to the trash. Save it as a shortcut and use it instead of drag
and drop.
- The manual has not been updated and is not
included with the beta download.
- Control backgrounds do not
match the backgrounds they are on.
- Control and element layout
is a bit tight.
Porting Cameraid to CarbonLib
was quite a bit of work. CarbonLib does most of the things our
beloved classic MacOS APIs do, but with sometimes very surprising
differences between MacOS 9 and MacOS X. I still don't like Aqua and
I especially hate Navigation Services under MacOS X (I'm beginning to
find Navigation Services under MacOS 9 somewhat acceptable).
I'm sure I'll receive quite a
few bug reports from MacOS X users. I'll investigate them as soon as
I can and fix problems as well as I can, when I can.
Hopefully this new version
will work at least well enough to satisfy the needs of users who have
switched from MacOS 9 to MacOS X and want to run Cameraid
natively.
Known problems with Version
1.2, December 26, 2001
A few problems have been found
with version 1.2. Unless really serious bugs are found, expect a
fixed version some time this winter or next spring. I will now start
working on carbon support, so hopefully that release will also
include a carbonized version of Cameraid.
- The splash screen uses the
Techno font. If that font is not available, the 'd' from Cameraid
will get clipped off. I will convert the Cameraid text in splash
pictures into bitmaps with the next release.
- If a file name generated
from a pattern ends up being too long, the batch processor will
abort with a -50 error (bad parameter). The batch processor is
actually looking for a "bad name error" and knows how to shorten
names automatically when it gets one of those. This bug will be
fixed in a future release. If this bug is causing you extensive
problems right now, please contact me by E-mail and I will try to
provide you an interim solution.
Version 1.2, December 21,
2001
Version 1.2b3 was very well
received and no problems have been reported or detected with it so
far. Thus, version 1.2 is identical to version 1.2b3 except for
changes in the version number. As of today, version 1.1.4 is no
longer available and the manual on the Cameraid web site has been
updated to version 1.2.
If you already have version
1.2b3, you do not need to download version 1.2.
Version 1.2b3, December 14,
2001
My apologies for the delays in
producing this version. My dog Otto (he is on the stamp on the
home
page) became sick in
early September and got progressively worse and needed more and more
care. He died on December 5th 2001. My time was split between
performing my duties in my primary work (I write Mac software at
F-Secure) and caring for my dear friend. Very little time was left
over for working on Cameraid (beyond basic technical support).
Based on version 1.2b2, I
received some very good feedback from a few users. This prompted me
to make some more changes to Cameraid, even though the program was in
the middle of beta testing. With relatively little effort (a few long
nights of programming), I was able to make Cameraid significantly
better.
New features:
- Binary scaling mode for a
huge improvement in display speed of JPEG files in reduced
sizes.
- HTML generator
changes
- New batch processing
functions
- Bug fixes here and
there
- An updated manual for
version 1.2
I would like to do a Christmas
release of Cameraid. This leaves only a few days for this last beta
version. It has been in limited audience alpha testing for quite a
while now, so I'm hoping this public beta version will do just as
well and version 1.2 will be ready for release in exactly one week
from now.
If you would like to help me
out, please test this version and read through the manual and report
any problems.
I initially forgot to change
the splash screen version number, so the first 100-200 downloads
received a version where the splash screen says 1.2b2. You can use
Get Info from the Finder to verify you really have 1.2b3. The
programs are otherwise identical.
The updated manual is included
with the software. The manual on this web site is still the old
version for 1.1.4, which remains the official release until version
1.2 has been released.
Version 1.2b2, September 20,
2001
What's new:
- Default patterns were
changed so that they use the new system.
- Window sizes were adjusted
to make room for the longer pattern strings.
- Minor bugs & problems
were fixed with the pattern popup menu.
- The old :h and the new
{hour} and {h} patterns now use a 24 hour clock - automatic 12/24
hour selection is no longer available.
- The font size of dialogs
can be adjusted (look in the Extras folder for
information).
September 5, 2001
Compatibility testing with an
Olympus camera was made and no problems were found. If you have
issues with 1.2b1 that are not mentioned here, please report them
ASAP - I will be releasing version 1.2b2 soon. 1.2b2 is also a final
candidate for the release of 1.2.
Known problems in
1.2b1:
- 12-hour bug:
- The :h
pattern will use a 12 hour clock, if that's what you have your
system set up to use. In 1.1.4, the :h pattern always used a 24
hour clock.
- This will be
fixed in the next release. Meanwhile use {hour24} instead of
:h, if you wish to use a 24 hour clock.
- Should the
{h} pattern default to 24 hours or use the system
setting?
- Feedback
is welcome.
Version 1.2b1, July 26,
2001
The 'vers' resource for 1.2b1
had not been updated correctly, so a silent update was made to fix
that. It was also discovered that the error dialog box resource had
been modified incorrectly and any OS error would complain that
Quicktime was missing. These fixes were made without changing the
version number (no code changes were made).
If you already have 1.2b1,
update only if you are getting errors that claim you don't have
Quicktime installed - the real error messages will be shown with the
fixed version that is now available for download.
Version 1.2b1, July 24,
2001
As you can see from the date,
it took me quite a while to finish up version 1.2. It was in large
part my own fault (I should work harder?), but I also did a lot more
than I had planned for version 1.2. The overall appearance of the
program hasn't changed much, but there are small changes and
additions all over the program.
The manual has not been
updated yet. I will work on the manual while the software is in beta
test. Use balloon help to find out about new batch processor items.
If you can't figure it out, let me know - I'll try to address your
questions in the new manual or change the interface to make the
program more understandable, where possible.
Here's a quick list of the
most significant changes:
- File name
generation:
- A totally new renaming
system is in place. This is a complete rewrite with backwards
compatibility (I hope) with the old version.
- You can use the old
patterns (and your old batch processor files), if you
wish.
- The new patterns (or
variables) are shown in pop-up menus. There are many new items
to choose from.
- The new rename system
should be significantly faster for large numbers of
files.
- Downloads:
- Downloads now work on
cameras with multiple folders. Use the pop-up menu to update
the folder list and change folders.
- The download code was
significantly revised and will hopefully work even better than
before. Please report if you find problems.
- Quicktime:
- Downloads now handle
Quicktime Movies correctly.
- Movies can be played in
the viewer.
- Movies can be batch
processed (thumbnails, renames, web pages with QT
movies).
- Movies do not currently
rotate or transform at all. I will probably add lossless QT
movie rotation to a later version - possibly even version 1.2,
if the beta test period is extended for some reason.
- Batch processor:
- The user interface was
reorganized.
- Files can be selected
based on their size (say, any JPEG files larger than 400KB
could be recompressed).
- You can use flexible
compression settings by setting a file size target and minimum
compression quality (say, compress all files to less than 200KB
or at least JPEG quality 75).
- Original files can be
moved into the trash (very useful in itself for removing
unwanted files using the grading system) or deleted
directly.
- Smaller thumbnail file
size (this is actually a bug fix - EXIF headers were usually
copied into the thumbnail files, making them much larger than
necessary).
- The splash and reminder
screens were updated - I hope you like the new backgrounds.
- Many minor bugs were
fixed, performance improvements were found (especially for opening
photo collection files).
My sincere apologies for
taking so long. I hope you find the additions and changes worthwhile
and the quality of workmanship acceptable.
Version 1.1.4, December 26,
2000
I'm releasing version 1.1.4
now, so that when I have a beta version of 1.2, I will also have a
"regular" release version available. Note that except for the version
number change and the addition of "Polaroid" in the camera menu,
there are no changes from version 1.1.4b2.
December, 2000
Changes to version 1.2 (not
available yet, beta ETA in January 2001):
- Significantly faster
opening of collection files. It wasn't a bug, but it was very
inefficient.
- Cameraid can now
automatically set the time and date on a camera when it downloads
photos.
- I'm rewriting the rename
patterns to be more legible (old style patterns will also be
supported) and adding more patterns at the same time.
October 26, 2000
This is an interim update on
what's going on with Cameraid. I don't have a version to release
quite yet, but I thought I would use this page to give you some
news.
Here's what I have already
added to 1.2:
- Batch processor can create
JPEG files with a size limit (compression is automatically
adjusted to make the file fit within a budget.
- In-camera folders are now
supported for cameras that are in the same "family" as Nikon
(Olympus is particularly important, since they now automatically
create folders on all memory cards).
I have a few more features to
add before 1.2 can go into beta testing.
Version 1.1.4b2 (May 3,
2000)
Keyspan has posted an updated
version of their Twin Serial Adapter drivers. These will probably
allow you to use Cameraid 1.1.3 with a Keyspan adapter, although my
testing reveals that there's still one remaining incompatibility that
could cause Cameraid to freeze, if anything goes wrong during the
download.
Meanwhile, I managed to work
around these bugs, so Cameraid 1.1.4b2 should work with the previous
and current version of Keyspan drivers. The changes may affect
buffering on older Macs. If you experience problems that didn't exist
with 1.1.3, please report them to me and I'll consider restoring the code
to the way it was before.
Version 1.1.4b1: Updated
Information
Unfortunately my hopes to have
fixed the problems with 9.0.2 and 9.0.4 turned out to be false.
Cameraid still works on my machine in some cases, but fails to work
at least right after a reboot. I suspect the debug version or
debugger somehow prevents the bug from happening after they have been
used.
For now, disable virtual
memory to use Cameraid with USB adapters and MacOS 9.0.x. I will try
to get to the bottom of this during WWDC 2000.
Version 1.1.4b1 (April 28,
2000)
Some changes in the USB
manager in MacOS 9.0.2 and 9.0.4 caused USB devices to behave
differently. This triggered a problem in Cameraid, if virtual memory
was enabled. I finally managed to find what appears to be a solution
to this problem, so I'm releasing this beta version.
Other changes include support
for files with the JFIF file type, improved shortcut handling for
applications and volume aliases. Additionally, if available, metering
mode and exposure program are shown like this: [5:2].
The manual has not been
updated - it will be updated with the next release version.
Version 1.1.3 (September 17,
1999)
This is the release version of
Cameraid 1.1.3. The batch processor window is now bigger ot make
space for a larger caption entry field on the "HTML" panel and the
TIFF file selection option of the "Select" panel.
Indexing image files with
letters will now start with the letter A instead of B.
The manual was again updated
with additional serial download troubleshooting.
An "Extras" folder was
created, containing a sample Applescript for deleting files and a
sample batch processor document that demonstrate how captions can be
used to generate more advanced web pages.
Version 1.1.3b3 (August 6,
1999)
The ability to use shift with
keyboard shortcuts in the shortcuts menu was broken in version
1.1.3b2. I find this feature very useful, so fixed this problem and
added some code so that the control key also works with keyboard
shortcuts.
Version 1.1.3b2 (August 6,
1999)
As you can see, things didn't
go quite as planned with version 1.1.3. It has been a hot summer here
and for some reason my brain seems to go on vacation whenever the
mercury rises high enough...
There were some minor problems
in the TIFF support in version 1.1.3b1. They have hopefully now been
fixed. Cameraid can now use temporary memory for downloaded images,
so you don't have to have several megabytes of RAM allocated to
Cameraid just to download TIFFs.
The manual has been updated to
reflect the changes in the manual and the availability of new memory
card readers and I/O devices.
New rename tags (:x, :z and :X
and :Z) have been added so that image size can be used
as a part of the rename pattern.
The HTML panel of the batch processor is now
improved and supports
captions under the thumbnails and allows easier creation of
thumbnails for web pages. Note that you can now produce a web page
with links to scaled images and small thumbnails with a single batch
processor! (It used to take two.)
You can customize
Cameraid by placing a
"Cameraid Resources" file in the same folder as Cameraid. It will
override resources in the Cameraid application. This is useful if you
have changed any resources in Cameraid (like the template for custom
photo icons) and want to keep those modifications separate from
Cameraid itself.
There's a sample "Cameraid
Resources" file in the user's guide folder. Move it into the same
folder with Cameraid and restart Cameraid to use it. You have to quit
Cameraid if you wish to edit or add resources within this
file.
Command-up and down arrow will
toggle through items on pop-up menus that are placed after text
items.
Version 1.1.3b1 (June 27,
1999)
Version 1.1.3 will be released
soon. This is a limited distribution release (in that it will not be
advertised anywhere as having become available). If all goes well,
version 1.1.3 should be out in a few days.
EXIF photo info display is now
more accurate.
Downloads from Coolpix 950
cameras should work even better than before. (In some cases the
camera would hang after the transfer.)
Sorting by file name should be
a lot faster.
HTML thumbnail button border
width settings now work. My apologies - I fixed it as soon as someone
pointed it out. I can't fix bugs that no one reports, so PLEASE
REPORT BUGS, if you find any.
TIFF files are supported for
renaming and display (assuming you have at least QuickTime 2.5). Note
that serial port downloads still do not support TIFF files. The
information on how to access TIFF files through the serial protocol
doesn't seem to be openly available - I may have to try to negotiate
getting this information from Nikon and finally sign their
NDA.
Minor changes to default
preferences.
The manual will be updated for
1.1.3, but hasn't been touched yet.
Version 1.1.3d6 (March 30,
1999)
This version includes some
user interface enhancements in the batch processor windows. I'm also
including more files with this release, so that you do not absolutely
need to download Cameraid 1.1.2 to use this version. The manual is
not included - download version 1.1.2 to obtain a copy of the
manual.
Version 1.1.3d5 (March 19,
1999)
Everything that was said about
development versions (below) still applies.
This version includes a slight
change to the "clean up colors" filtering option in the batch
processor.
In anticipation of digital
cameras with adjustable ISO ratings and other neat features, I added
the ability to display a few more parameters from EXIF-compliant
cameras. Exposure adjustment, ISO speed and metering mode are
displayed, if they are available.
There's a minor cosmetic
System 8.5 tweak as well -popup menus will again align with the text
on the same line. (Apple changed the way menus were drawn in
Appearance 1.1.)
Version 1.1.3d (Feb 24,
1999)
The 'd' stands for development
and it means that very little real world testing has been done on
these versions of Cameraid.
At the time of this writing,
it's not clear if there will be an official version 1.1.3 or not. The
changes in 1.1.3 may be incorporated to a future version (version 1.2
or 2.0). There have been some minor changes to the serial download
code to try to solve problems that some users have still been
experiencing - please report to me if 1.1.3d works differently from
1.1.2 on your machine.
The batch processor image
enhancer would produce blue images on 68K Macs. This has been fixed
now. If you use a 68K Mac and use the batch processor, you should
probably upgrade to this version.
It's now possible to change
the creator of existing files while they are being renamed or while
thumbnails or icons are being added to them. See the "Files"
panel.
Version 1.1.2 (Feb 7,
1999)
Two minor changes were made to
improve compatibility with MacOS 8.5 and 8.5.1. First, Shortcut menu
aliases to disk volumes (such as SmartMedia cards) didn't work
correctly, so a bit of code was added to do the work if Apple's code
failed. Second, popup menus look a bit different in 8.5 and were made
a bit smaller in Cameraid to look better. They now look worse than
they used to, if you don't have the Appearance Manager, but they work
just as well as they used to.
If you have version 1.1.2b2
and you are happy with how it work, you do not need to download
version 1.1.2. For this reason, the announcement of this new version
is kept relatively quiet.
The manual has a new section
on memory card readers and some new tips on how to get serial port
downloads working better.
Version 1.1.2b2 (Jan 26,
1999)
Version 1.1.2b2 has some minor
changes in the digital camera download code. I can't tell if I fixed
any bugs, I'm quite sure I didn't introduce any new problems (famous
last words).
Version 1.1.2b1 (Jan 16,
1999)
Version 1.1.2b1 is an attempt
to fix a freezing problem that occurs with serial downloads from Fuji
cameras using Keyspan USB and PCI serial ports. No other changes have
been made.
Version 1.1.1 (Dec 26,
1998)
Version 1.1.1b2 appears to
have been of release quality. The same source code was compiled with
a new version of Metrowerks Codewarrior to provide the best possible
performance and highest possible code reliability.
Version 1.2 is tentatively
scheduled for Q2, 1999 and there may be an interim 1.1.2 release to
add a few more useful features (most notably the ability to set the
pixels per inch of generated JPEG images).
The amount of registrations
that I receive is very closely related to the amount of time that I
can spend on improving Cameraid. Many thanks to those who registered
version 1.1 and made it possible to release 1.1.1 so soon after
1.1.
If you have a technical
problem with Cameraid, please report it to me with as much relevant
information as possible. I will do my best to resolve that problem as
soon as I can. Most questions are usually answered within 24
hours.
Version 1.1.1b2
This beta version of Cameraid
1.1.1 is for registered users and selected beta testers. If all goes
well and no problems are found with this version, it will be released
as version 1.1.1 some time before the end of 1998.
Changes include:
- The manual should now be
up to date again
- Batch processing:
- Advanced panel was
split into two separate panels
- You can set your
preferred image midtone brightness using the advanced
panel.
- Downloads:
- Fuji timeouts were
modified - I'm particularly interested in feedback from
Fuji/Toshiba/Leica users. Let me know if I broke something
while trying to fix a few problems. Also let me know if I
actually managed to fix a problem you were experiencing.
- General:
- A new version of
CodeWarrior was used to compile the application (version Pro 4)
and some optimization settings were changed. As a result,
Cameraid should be faster at filtering images and transforming
JPEG images. Please let me know if you experience any new
problems - unfortunately the compiler isn't 100%
reliable.
- Cameraid is now less
likely to complain about low memory conditions in cases where
memory is only low for a very short duration and the shortage
isn't likely to affect reliability.
Version 1.1.1b1
This is the first beta test
release of Cameraid 1.1.1. It may still have a few bugs and I'm
likely to make a few minor additions and changes before 1.1.1 is
released.
If you are in the beta test
program, I would very much like to get feedback from you. Useful
feedback is often awarded with a free registration.
I need to know:
- about bugs
- about stuff you can't
figure out how to use
- any other problems with
the program
The manual is not quite up to
date yet. I will update the manual before version 1.1.1 is released.
It's currently scheduled for Christmas 1998.
Cheers,
Juri
